Yet another doozy of an episode... hoo boy

Observations[edit | edit source]

  • Himeka's first dream:
    • A beams of blue light reaches the moon and changes its color, making the crystal we see later visible. The Clocktower, showing midnight, stands in a black-skyed labyrinth, chiming away.
    • Himeka walks through an Escher-like place, descending(?) staircases until she reaches solid ground. She approaches a spotlight; from the other side, the other Himeka appears. They shed one tear each, from opposite eyes, and approach each other. An image of Suzuka and the young Himeka swirls away into the moon. "We finally meet..." With these words, Himeka2 reaches out her left hand towards Himeka, who responds in kind with her right. They place their palms together... and the images shatters down the middle, separating them. The moon shatters, revealing a crystaline structure inside. The Clocktower chimes and the city decays. Fade to black.
  • There's a full moon over the Karasuma house, even though it was a crecent in the previous episode. The ring of Zeus, now shown to be over Himeka2's bed, glows red. Kirika is awake, looking wistfully at a photo of her family (unlike the manga, Kirika's face is obscured, likely because we don't find out her identity in this scene) when the Nyx ring reacts. Kirika goes to Himeka2's room. The doors open on their own; the entire room is filled with red light. Kirika recoils from it. Her eyes glaze over red as the Clocktower's chime is heard...
  • Meanwhile back at the Kujyou residence, that almost kiss from the previous episode is now an important plot point. Filler averted! Also it is indeed the first day back at school from summer break.
  • Adieu~ Karin misses out on eel curry for breakfast.
  • Himeka2 wakes up and tells Kirio abut her strange dream... as Kazune and Himeka1 share about the same conversation. "It sure was a strange dream. But..." "It was somewhat nostalgic." Kirika watches her siblings all suspicious-like. The Zeus ring is gone from its usual place.
  • Kirio briefly sees Kirihiko's shadow over Kirika...
  • Karin goes all harite on a tree and... oh, hi Kirika.
  • The Zeus ring glows steadily. Himeka walks down a hallway in the school...
    • The hallway stretches away behind her, but before her is a winding staircase leading all the way to the moon, lit by a spotlight (moonlight?). "Just like my dream..." She approaches it, climbs it... and becomes a child. She continues to climb. It's a long way to the moon.
  • Kazune's ring reacts. Kazune says its a reaction he's never seen before.
  • Karin and Kirika's date. They pass the clock shop previously seen in episode 8. The Zeus ring still glows.
  • Eel ice cream?... "Senpai, how did you know I liked eel-flavored ice cream?" Kirika smirks kinda hideously. "I know everything about you. Because I've always been watcing you." Karin takes this as romantic... Knowing that Kirihiko was in love with Suzuka (would the writers have know that at this point?) makes this even weirder.
  • The ring stops glowing when Kirika tries to give it to Karin... a nearby cicada flees. The nearby fountain abruptly shuts off, like the lights at the end of ep 1. Kirika's eyes glow...
  • Kirika begins attacking with the Zeus ring, without putting it on. After a bit of fighting, the ring creates an orb of light (similar to Karin's first transformation in ep 2) than engulfs Kirika. She struggles to stay upright, collapses, then gets up looking even further out of it than before. The ring is now on her finger... She smirks and does a little evil laugh. The orb of light expands, and turns into a beam, shooting straight up into the sky.
  • Micchi's ring glows, the first time we've ever seen it do so. Kirio's ring also reacts. "It can't be..." He seems to have some idea of what happened.
  • The beam shakes. Kirika refers to the ring as "father's memento... and a weapon that can defeat you!" and oh god that's quite a scary face. The beam grows...
  • Himeka, still a little child, walks in the Labyrinth, until she comes face to face with Kirihiko. The Clocktower is present, as always. Kirihiko holds out the Zeus ring on his palm and uses it on Himeka. A beam of light shoots out from her up to the Moon; the Clocktower's chime is heard as it hits. It turns red briefly and then splits into two. The Clocktower, hands on midnight, chimes. Himeka is pulled apart into two. Kirihiko smirks...
  • ... And Kirika completely loses control of the ring. Himeka comes back to reality with a cry of anguish, gasping for breath. Himeka2 sits up in bed, like she just woke up, and smirks.
  • And then Kirika staggers out of the bushes and Karin sees her boobies. The end.

Analysis[edit | edit source]

While Kirikia is definitely grade-A not herself today, she doesn't seem to be actually possessed by Kirihiko- she still refers to herself with "boku" (which I'm pretty sure Kirihiko doesn't), and even as she's completely losing it she refers to Kirihiko as "father", even though there would be no reason for him to keep up the facade at that point.

Kirika's motives in giving Karin the Zeus ring would likely be different than in the manga, given the difference in her state of mind... either way it's an attack on Karin, even if the details differ.

Obviously things went down because of the full moon weakening the seal, but since nothing like this ever happened before even though more than a month has definitely passed since the series began, there's likely another requirement. At the very least something pushed things over a tipping point. Micchi's presence with his mystery ring? Just due to the rising kamika activity of late?

This episode implies a connection between midnight and the Himeka-splitting event- the Clocktower seems to be frozen at midnight during both of Himeka's dream sequences, but whereas the Clocktower hitting midnight caused the city to decay immediately in ep 8, now it doesn't happen until the Himekas touch hands. The Clock was also at midnight when Kirihiko used the Zeus ring on Himeka, but if the city decayed, it wasn't shown. This makes it seem that the splitting of Himeka is what caused the city to be destroyed at midnight (whether once or repeatedly). It's probably connected to the Zeus ring's immense destructive power as well.

The opening scene shows a blue beam reaching the moon and making the crystal inside it visible, seemingly a different event from the red beam from the Zeus ring that split the moon, despite the scenes looking similar. The blue beam might be symbolic rather than an event that has/will/would happen(ed). At any rate, I'd guess it had something to do with the Himekas being reunited in the dream.
